Behind the scenes at Deutsche Messe

Special lectern for Bill Gates? No problem.

You want an oval wooden table that can seat 18 people? No problem: The wood and plastics technicians process 3,500 square metres of panel material annually - enough to cover four football fields. Nothing is impossible for them: For a speech by Bill Gates they even made a special lectern and for an EU event, they made the oval table required.

Nothing is impossible - 100 specialists take care of events, conference halls and exhibition grounds in Hannover.

Up to 20,000 people are involved in set up and 65,000 in services at HANNOVER MESSE. The logistics for such major events, where an average of 320,000 bottles or cans of soft drinks, 65,000 sausages and 14,000 bottles of wine are consumed, are enormous.

Matthias Dorsch, Head of Operations Technology, together with 99 specialists, is responsible for ensuring that all types of events, small and large, run smoothly 365 days of the year. At the same time, he and his team ensure that the buildings are maintained.

Electrical engineers replace 35,000 light bulbs every year.

The electrical engineering department, looks after 30 high-voltage stations with 145 transformers. During trade fairs, as much electricity is provided here as provided to a city the size of Nottingham or Augsburg (300,000 inhabitants!). In the event of a power failure, 22 emergency power generators and 38 uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems are available.

Gates open: Customers and visitors are welcome!

How does a truck get into the hall to set up the exhibition stand? This is where the metalworkers help. They look after 432 gates that provide access to the exhibition grounds and the halls, as well as all doors and windows in the buildings and halls. Always on the move: the conveyor technicians. They look after 72 passenger and freight elevators, three small elevators and lifting platforms each, 39 escalators and eleven moving walks.

Air conditioning technicians move a lot of hot and cold air.

The air conditioning technicians are tasked with the maintenance, inspection and repair of the heating, cooling and ventilation systems. They move up to 16 million cubic metres of supply air and 14 million cubic metres of exhaust air - per hour. The heating capacity is 110 megawatts - the equivalent of 55 electric fan heaters or 5,500 residential heating systems. The cooling capacity consumes up to 85 megawatts of electricity - as much as 170,000 refrigerators.

Even the sanitary engineers cannot complain about too little work. They maintain 275 ladies', men's and disabled WC facilities with 2,000 toilets, 1,500 wash basins and 1,200 urinals. They also ensure the best drinking water quality for the facility, all whilst looking after the 130 sprinkler systems that protect people and buildings from fire.

76 soccer fields could be laid out with the 393,000 square meters of roof surface and 374,000 square meters of floor and tile surfaces that the construction engineers are taking care of. Of course, all this is not possible without spare parts: The materials management department keeps around 4,000 stock items in stock for emergencies. This means that breakdowns can be rectified immediately.

Advertising technology prints more than 10,000 square meters of material for HANNOVER MESSE alone.

In the former sign painting shop, advertising technicians now plan, design, produce and assemble graphics for events. They produce 60,000 square metres of digital printing per year, which corresponds to an area of 260 tennis courts. With more than 4,000 orders per year, they place and hang up to 65,000 signs - from small stand signs to 300 square metre mega banners. For HANNOVER MESSE, 10,000 square meters of material are digitally printed as well as 1,800 meters of foil and 3,500 meters of textile fabrics, using 195 litres of ink.

Gardeners tend more than 4,000 trees and 300,000 square meters of green space.

With their green thumbs, gardeners and florists take care of 4,100 trees and 300,000 square metres of lawn and shrubs. In addition, there are another 800 green plants and 200 tubs of mobile greenery, as well as many creative floral arrangements, made according to customer requirements. The cherries don't want to blossom in time for HANNOVER MESSE? No problem, the artificial blossoms of Japanese cherries are put on the trees - many long-standing employees have not forgotten this action to this day and remember it with a smile. Matthias Dorsch assures with a wink: "We don't use tricks like that anymore today!

Fair Gastronomy: Catering at the highest level for events of all kinds.

Whether standing parties, press catering, crew catering or beverage delivery service - Messe Gastronomie provides every event with food and staff of the highest standard. From a four-member board meeting to a mega-event with 30,000 guests: depending on requirements, on site staffing can be increased from 47 employees to up to 1,400. Thomas Domani, Managing Director Catering & Restaurants, signs 7,800 employee contracts every year. There are 46 restaurants, 35 mobile dispensing systems, 57 mobile sales counters and a commercial centre with a pastry shop and meat processing plant on the exhibition grounds. With 80 kitchens Domani is spoilt for choice. One of the largest is the kitchen in the Munich hall with 5,000 square meters. Domani: "Sometimes I also bring the kitchen to the stand. For the Harting company, for example, which traditionally needs 400 to 500 meals of the highest quality every day at HANNOVER MESSE".

His shopping list is quite impressive. Every year, 200,000 litres of beer and 300,000 litres of water are sold at the exhibition centre. Even the Christmas gifts for Deutsche Messe customers was made here. Domani: "We have boiled down 5,000 jars of jam!"
